2016 presidential candidates competed in the first vote of the election season, the Iowa caucus, on Feb. 1, 2016.
Ted Cruz won the Republican contest with 27.6% of the votes and 8 delegates, followed by Donald Trump (24.3% and 7) and Marco Rubio (23.1% and 7). Ben Carson came in fourth place with 9.3% of the votes and 3 delegates. Republican candidates Rand Paul (4.5%) and Jeb Bush (2.8%) each earned one delegate, while Carly Fiorina (1.9%), John Kasich (1.9%), Mike Huckabee (1.8%), Chris Christie (1.8%), Rick Santorum (1%), and Jim Gilmore (0%) did not earn any delegates.
A winner for the Democrats was not declared on Monday because the votes were so close. Hillary Clinton was declared the winner Tuesday afternoon with 49.9% of the vote and 23 delegates, and Bernie Sanders had 49.6% of the vote and 21 delegates. Martin O’Malley earned 0.6% of the votes.
As a result of their low votes in the Iowa caucus, Democrat Martin O’Malley and Republican Mike Huckabee both suspended their presidential campaigns late on Feb. 1, 2016.
